The 2010 Volvo V70 maintenance specs on this page cover the key fluids, torque values, and wear items you need for routine service. Use these numbers as a quick reference when performing oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs, and other scheduled maintenance on your Volvo V70.

For oil changes, the 2010 Volvo V70 takes 5W-30 Full Synthetic motor oil with a capacity of 7 quarts. Brake fluid type is DOT 4, the recommended coolant is Volvo Coolant (Blue, phosphate-free), and transmission fluid is Volvo Transmission Oil. Always use the manufacturer-recommended fluids to maintain warranty coverage and engine longevity.

When mounting wheels on the Volvo V70, torque the lug nuts to 103 ft-lbs using a calibrated torque wrench. Over- or under-torquing can lead to warped brake rotors or loose wheels. Re-torque after 50 to 100 miles on newly installed wheels.

Common problems reported by 2010 Volvo V70 owners, with recommended fixes and estimated repair costs.

1

Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement (Critical Service)

The V70's inline-five and inline-six engines use a timing belt system that requires replacement at the manufacturer's specified interval. The water pump, driven by the timing belt, frequently develops leaks and is the most common failure point. A failed water pump can contaminate the timing belt with coolant, leading to belt slippage or breakage and catastrophic engine damage.

Solution

Replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and all idler pulleys as a complete service kit. Volvo recommends this service at 108,000 miles or 10 years, but many specialists recommend 80,000-90,000 miles for safety. The serpentine belt and its tensioner should also be replaced during this service.

Est. Cost: $800 - $1,500 (complete timing belt service)
2

PCV System Breather Box Failure

The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system, specifically the breather box integrated into the intake manifold, fails and creates excessive crankcase pressure. Symptoms include oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and rear main seal, rough idle, increased oil consumption, and a vacuum leak that triggers the check engine light. This is a known design weakness of the 5-cylinder engine.

Solution

Replace the PCV breather box assembly. This requires removal of the intake manifold. All vacuum hoses associated with the PCV system should be replaced at the same time. After repair, address any secondary oil leaks that developed from the excess crankcase pressure (valve cover gasket, cam seals, rear main seal).

Est. Cost: $300 - $700 (PCV box) / $500 - $1,500 (secondary seal repairs)
3

Electrical Window Regulator and Switch Failure

Power window regulators fail, causing the window to drop into the door panel, move slowly, or become stuck halfway. The window switches on the driver's door panel also develop contact wear, causing intermittent operation. The rear window regulators are particularly prone to failure, and the window can drop suddenly while driving.

Solution

Replace the failed window regulator assembly. The window motor is typically replaced along with the regulator as a unit. If the driver's door master switch panel is faulty, it must be replaced as a complete assembly. The door panel clips should be carefully removed to prevent breakage during the repair.

Est. Cost: $250 - $500 per window (regulator) / $150 - $350 (switch panel)
4

ABS Module and Wheel Speed Sensor Issues

The ABS module develops internal electronic faults from thermal stress and vibration, causing the ABS, traction control, and stability control warning lights to illuminate. Additionally, the wheel speed sensors corrode and fail, providing erratic speed readings that trigger ABS intervention at inappropriate times. Cold weather exacerbates sensor failures.

Solution

Diagnose whether the fault lies in the ABS module or the wheel speed sensors using a scan tool. Individual wheel speed sensors can be replaced affordably. If the ABS module has internal electronic damage, it can be repaired by a specialized electronics shop or replaced with a new OEM unit. Brake fluid flush is recommended during the repair.

Est. Cost: $100 - $250 per sensor / $300 - $600 (module rework) / $1,200 - $2,000 (new module)
5

Central Electronic Module (CEM) Water Damage

The CEM, located behind the glove box, is vulnerable to water ingress from a clogged AC evaporator drain or windshield cowl drain. Water damage to the CEM causes widespread electrical malfunctions including failed door locks, non-functioning interior lights, windshield wiper faults, and intermittent no-start conditions. This is a common and expensive failure.

Solution

If the CEM is water-damaged, it must be replaced and programmed using the Volvo VIDA diagnostic system. The root cause — a clogged evaporator drain tube or cowl drain — must be cleared to prevent recurrence. Some specialists can repair corroded CEM circuit boards, but replacement is more reliable.

Est. Cost: $500 - $1,500 (CEM replacement and programming)

SEAT BELTS:FRONT

Campaign: 20V378000 Date: 30/06/2020

Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.

Consequence

An unsecured occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Remedy

Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt anchor cable for both front seats. The recall began December 10, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R10029.
