The 2019 Niro Hybrid's lithium-ion polymer battery pack can experience premature capacity degradation, resulting in reduced electric-only driving range and decreased fuel economy. Some owners report the hybrid system warning light illuminating and the vehicle defaulting to engine-only operation. Battery cell imbalance is a common root cause.

Have the dealer perform a hybrid battery health assessment using the KDS diagnostic tool. Kia covers the hybrid battery under a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. If individual cells are out of balance, the battery management system may need recalibration or specific cell modules may need replacement rather than the entire pack.

The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission in the 2019 Niro Hybrid exhibits shuddering, hesitation from a stop, and jerky low-speed behavior similar to other Hyundai/Kia DCT-equipped vehicles. The issue is particularly pronounced during the transition between electric motor and engine power delivery, creating an uncomfortable surge during hybrid mode switching.

Kia extended the DCT warranty and released multiple TCU software updates to improve shift smoothness and the electric-to-engine power transition. Dealers will update the HCU (Hybrid Control Unit) and TCU software. If shuddering persists, the clutch assembly may need replacement under the extended warranty.

The 2019 Niro is susceptible to 12V auxiliary battery drain, leaving the vehicle unable to start. The hybrid system's multiple control modules can draw excessive current when the vehicle is in a parked state, and the DC-DC converter may not adequately maintain the 12V battery charge during short trips.

Have the dealer update the power management software, which optimizes the DC-DC converter's charging behavior and reduces parasitic draw from vehicle modules. Replace the 12V battery if it has been deeply discharged multiple times, as this permanently reduces its capacity. Consider a higher-capacity AGM replacement battery.

The infotainment system in the 2019 Niro frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive to touch input, and drops Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections during use. The system may also spontaneously reboot while playing media or during navigation, disrupting the hybrid energy flow display and climate controls.

Kia released a Display Audio software update to address stability and connectivity issues. Dealers will update the head unit firmware. Ensure you are using a certified MFi (Made for iPhone) or USB-IF certified cable for wired connections. A temporary fix for freezes is holding the power button for 10+ seconds.

The power rear hatch latch on the 2019 Niro can fail to engage properly, causing the hatch to pop open while driving or preventing it from opening when commanded. Owners report the hatch warning light remaining illuminated on the dashboard despite the hatch appearing fully closed. The issue is caused by a faulty latch motor or misaligned striker.

Have the dealer inspect and adjust the rear hatch striker alignment. If the latch motor has failed, the entire latch assembly will need replacement. Kia released a TSB addressing hatch latch issues on 2017-2019 Niro models. The repair is covered under the basic warranty.

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2022 Niro and 2018-2022 Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Fluid may leak into the printed circuit board inside the hydraulic clutch actuator, which can result in an engine compartment fire.

A fire increases the risk of injury.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Kia Niro hybrid electric vehicles previously recalled under recall 18V-666. The Main Relay within the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) may have inadequate connections between its contacts, causing increased electrical resistance, which can overheat the rear seats.

Overheated rear seats increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will inspect the PRA and replace either the PRA or the Main Relay, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 9, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC256. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 18V-666. Vehicles already repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy completed.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Kia Niro hybrid electric vehicles. The Main Relay within the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) may have inadequate connections between its contacts, causing increased electrical resistance.

The increased electrical resistance can overheat the rear seat which is above the PRA, increasing the risk of a fire.

Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) for damage. If no damage is found, the main relay will be replaced. If damage is found, the PRA will be replaced. Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017 Kia Niro vehicles. The Hydraulic Clutch Actuator (HCA) inner oil seal may leak, allowing oil to accumulate in the cap area, possibly resulting in an electrical short.

An electrical short can increase the risk of a fire.

Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the HCA caps for leaked oil and replace the HCA assembly if needed, or replace the HCA cap with additional sealant.
