Common problems reported by 2018 Ford Transit Connect owners, with recommended fixes and estimated repair costs.

1

Rearview Camera Blank/Persistent Image (Recall)

A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image when the vehicle is in reverse, or the camera image may remain on the infotainment display after the backing event has ended, obstructing the navigation or audio screen.

Solution

Ford issued a recall for 2018-2022 Transit Connect vehicles to update the rearview camera software. Contact your dealer to verify your VIN. The repair is free of charge.

Est. Cost: Covered under recall
2

Passenger Seat Belt ALR Early Deactivation (Recall)

The front passenger seat belt automatic locking retractor (ALR) may deactivate early, preventing the child restraint system from being secured properly. This creates a significant safety risk for child passengers in car seats.

Solution

Ford issued a recall for 2021-2022 Transit and Transit Connect vehicles. The dealer will inspect the front passenger seat belt assembly and replace it as necessary, free of charge.

Est. Cost: Covered under recall
3

Shifter Cable Bushing Degradation

The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission can degrade or detach over time. When this happens, the driver may be unable to shift out of Park or the gear indicator may not match the actual transmission gear position, creating a rollaway risk.

Solution

Ford issued a recall for Transit Connect vehicles to replace the under-hood shift bushing and install a protective cap over the cable bushing. Contact your dealer to check your VIN. The repair is free of charge.

Est. Cost: Covered under recall
4

Transmission Harsh Shifting (6-Speed Auto)

The 6-speed automatic transmission can shift harshly, particularly in the 2nd-to-3rd and 3rd-to-4th gear transitions. Owners report lurching and delayed engagement when accelerating from a stop, especially when the transmission is cold.

Solution

Have the dealer perform a transmission fluid flush with the specified fluid and reprogram the TCM with the latest shift calibration. Ensure the fluid level is correct. In persistent cases, the valve body may need inspection and replacement.

Est. Cost: $200 - $400 for fluid and reprogram; $1,200 - $2,500 for valve body
5

SYNC Infotainment Freezing and Bluetooth Dropouts

The SYNC 3 infotainment system may freeze, become unresponsive, or lose Bluetooth connection with paired phones. Some owners report the navigation losing GPS signal and the screen going black intermittently.

Solution

Perform a SYNC master reset (Settings > General > Master Reset) and update to the latest software version via USB or dealer. Ford has released stability patches. If the APIM hardware is failing, the module needs replacement.

Est. Cost: $0 for software update; $500 - $1,200 for APIM replacement
