2020 Audi Q8

The 3.0L TFSI V6 (EA839) in the Q8 can develop timing chain noise, particularly a rattling or whining sound from the front of the engine during cold starts. The chain tensioner may not maintain adequate tension, allowing the chain to slap against the guides. While Audi has improved the tensioner design from earlier generations, the issue still appears in some 2022 production Q8 models.

Dealer inspects the timing chain system for excessive play and wear. If the tensioner is out of specification, the timing chain, tensioner, and guides are replaced. The Q8's standard adaptive air suspension can develop air leaks at the air spring bellow crimps, valve block, and airline connections. The vehicle sags on one or more corners after sitting overnight, the compressor runs for extended periods, and 'Suspension Fault — Vehicle Too Low' messages appear. The compressor can overheat and fail from continuous operation trying to compensate for leaks.

Dealer performs a leak-down test of the entire air suspension system. Leaking air springs, air lines, or valve block components are replaced. The compressor should be tested for output pressure and replaced if weak. Reference Audi TSB 2040162/4 for air suspension leak diagnosis.

The Q8 features a unique dual-touchscreen MMI system (10.1-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower). Either or both screens can develop touch responsiveness issues, including dead zones, phantom touches (ghost inputs), and screen blackouts. The lower climate control screen is particularly prone to failure as it receives more finger presses and is exposed to drink spills. Haptic feedback motors can also fail.

Dealer replaces the affected display module. The MIB3 system requires a full software update after hardware replacement. Audi has released updated display modules with improved touch controllers. Screen protectors can help prevent future damage to the lower display.

The Q8's 48V mild hybrid system uses a belt-driven alternator starter (BAS) for start-stop functionality and mild hybrid boost. The BAS unit can fail, causing rough engine starts, inability to utilize start-stop, loss of energy recuperation, and electrical system warnings. The belt connecting the BAS to the engine can also stretch or slip, producing a squealing noise on startup.

Dealer replaces the BAS unit and associated belt. The 48V lithium-ion battery should be tested for proper voltage and capacity. The engine control module software may need updating to re-enable mild hybrid functions. Reference Audi TSB 2049387/1 for 48V system diagnosis.

Q8 owners report excessive wind noise from the panoramic sunroof area at highway speeds, even when the sunroof is closed. A creaking or popping noise from the sunroof frame is common during temperature changes and when driving over uneven roads. The large glass panel flexes slightly, and the seals around the perimeter can develop gaps due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Dealer inspects and replaces the sunroof perimeter seals. The sunroof frame may need adjustment and retorquing. Additional wind deflector adjustment can reduce aerodynamic noise. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2019-2026 vehicles. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Audi Q8, and 2020-2021 Audi Q7 vehicles. A component inside the fuel pump may break, causing the fuel pump to fail.

Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 22, 2022. Owners may contact Audi's customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 20DR.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2020 Audi Q8 vehicles. An insufficient weld on a transmission oil pipe may cause the vehicle to leak automatic transmission fluid (ATF).

If transmission fluid leaks while driving, the road surface may become slippery, increasing the risk of a crash.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmission oil pipe and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 12, 2020. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 38C7.
