2020 Mazda Cx-3

The Mazda Connect infotainment system experiences sluggish response to the rotary commander dial inputs, delayed touchscreen response when stopped, and intermittent Bluetooth disconnections. The navigation system can be slow to calculate routes, and USB audio playback may stutter or fail to recognize certain devices and file formats.

Update the Mazda Connect firmware to the latest version through the dealer. Perform a system reset by holding the back, nav, and mute buttons simultaneously. Use a high-quality USB cable for device connectivity. If the system continues to malfunction, the CMU (Connectivity Master Unit) may need replacement.

The CX-3 transmits significant road noise into the cabin, particularly at highway speeds. The small crossover's compact dimensions, thin door panels, and limited sound deadening allow tire and road noise to penetrate the cabin. The issue is more pronounced with the factory-equipped tires and on rough pavement surfaces.

Switch to a touring-focused tire with reduced road noise characteristics when the factory tires wear out. Install additional sound deadening material (Dynamat or similar) in the doors, rear wheel wells, and trunk floor. Add weatherstrip foam to the door jambs for improved sealing. These are aftermarket modifications with no Mazda TSB or recall.

The AC compressor can fail prematurely, and the evaporator can develop leaks that are difficult and expensive to repair because the dashboard must be removed to access it. Symptoms of evaporator failure include gradually diminishing cooling performance, a musty smell from the vents, and refrigerant that needs repeated recharging.

For compressor failure, replace the compressor, receiver/drier, and expansion valve as a system. For evaporator leaks, the dashboard must be partially disassembled to access and replace the evaporator core. Have the system evacuated, the leak repaired, and recharged. Apply evaporator foam cleaner annually to prevent bacterial growth and odor.

The 6-speed automatic transmission can exhibit firm or harsh shifts, particularly the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts when cold. Some owners report a shuddering sensation during low-speed acceleration and a clunking feel when shifting from park to drive or reverse. The transmission may also hesitate during passing maneuvers.

Have the transmission fluid checked and replaced with genuine Mazda ATF FZ. A TCM software update may improve shift quality. TSB 06-009/18 addresses certain shift quality concerns. If harsh shifting persists after fluid change and software update, the valve body may need inspection or replacement.

The rear brake calipers can seize due to corroded slide pins, causing uneven brake pad wear, a dragging sensation, reduced fuel economy, and a burning smell from the rear wheels. The issue is accelerated in regions that use road salt and is more common on vehicles where the caliper pins are not serviced during brake pad replacement.

Remove the rear caliper slide pins, clean the caliper bracket pin bores, apply high-temperature silicone brake grease, and reinstall. If the pins are severely corroded or the caliper bore is damaged, replace the caliper assembly. Replace the rear brake pads and inspect the rotors for scoring from the seized caliper.

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Mazda3 and 2016-2021 CX-3 vehicles. The rearview camera image may not display properly by showing a flickering or distorted image.

A rearview camera that does not display properly can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera, as necessary. In addition, dealers will install a wiring harness fastening seal. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed September 13, 2023. Final owner letters for affected models and model years in the states of CT, MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA and VA were mailed August 14, 2024. The remaining owner notification letters will be mailed at a future date, anticipated on or before May 1, 2025. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 6.
