Common problems reported by 2020 Nissan Altima owners, with recommended fixes and estimated repair costs.

1

Automatic Emergency Braking False Activation

The AEB system activates unexpectedly on highways and open roads with no obstacles present, causing sudden hard braking. Multiple NHTSA complaints describe the system triggering at highway speeds, creating rear-end collision risks.

Solution

Dealer can recalibrate the front radar sensor and update the AEB control module software. TSB NTB22-020 addresses sensor alignment. If issues persist, the forward-facing radar sensor may need replacement.

Est. Cost: $0 - $500 (sensor recalibration or replacement)
2

CVT Hesitation and No-Move Condition

The vehicle fails to move when the driver presses the gas pedal even though the instrument panel displays D for drive. Owners report the transmission seems to slip, hesitate, or completely disengage, particularly from a stop or at low speeds.

Solution

A CVT fluid drain and refill with NS-3 fluid and TCM reprogram per TSB NTB14-012G may resolve the issue. In severe cases, the valve body or complete CVT assembly requires replacement.

Est. Cost: $300 - $5,500
3

Left Front Coil Spring Fracture

The left front coil spring may fracture due to a manufacturing defect, causing the vehicle to sag on one side, produce clunking noises over bumps, and compromise handling stability and alignment.

Solution

Nissan issued a voluntary service campaign to replace the left front coil spring on affected 2022 Altima vehicles. Contact your dealer to verify eligibility.

Est. Cost: $0 (service campaign) / $250 - $500 if not covered
4

AWD Rear Differential Noise and Vibration

AWD-equipped models may develop abnormal noise, vibration, and/or judder from the rear differential, particularly during low-speed turns or parking maneuvers. The noise is described as a grinding or humming that worsens over time.

Solution

TSB NTB19-071B provides a procedure to inspect and replace the rear differential fluid with updated specification fluid. If noise persists, the differential coupling or transfer assembly may need replacement.

Est. Cost: $150 - $2,000
5

Windshield Spontaneous Cracking

Owners report windshield cracks appearing spontaneously without any visible impact point, often originating from the edges near the A-pillar or bottom of the windshield. The cracks tend to spread rapidly across the glass.

Solution

Windshield replacement is the only fix. Some owners have successfully filed claims with Nissan customer affairs if the crack appeared within the first year of ownership. No TSB or recall issued.

Est. Cost: $400 - $800

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICAL

Campaign: 25V437000 Date: 27/06/2025

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Rogue, 2019-2020 Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50, and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. The engine bearings may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure.

Consequence

Engine failure increases the risk of a crash. A bearing failure may cause a breach in the engine block, allowing hot oil to be discharged, increasing the risk of an engine fire.

Remedy

Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed February 2, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261 or Infiniti's customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R25A8/A9 and R25B1/B2.
