The 6-speed automatic transmission in the 2016 Rio can develop harsh shifting characteristics, particularly hard downshifts when decelerating and delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive. Some owners also report the transmission slipping or hunting between gears during highway driving.

Have the dealer perform a TCU software update with the latest shift logic calibration from Kia. If harsh shifting persists after the update, a transmission fluid flush with Kia SP-IV fluid may help. In severe cases, the valve body solenoids may need replacement.

The A/C compressor in the 2016 Rio is prone to premature failure, often signaled by a clicking or rattling noise when the A/C is engaged. When the compressor seizes, it can send metallic debris through the entire A/C system, contaminating the condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator and requiring extensive system flushing.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Rio vehicles. The brake master cylinder may have been manufactured with sharp edges that can damage the inner oil seal, resulting in reduced braking performance.

Reduced braking performance can cause longer brake pedal travel or extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
