The 2022 W223 S-Class features an optional rear axle steering system that can turn the rear wheels up to 10 degrees. Owners report 'Rear Axle Steering Malfunction' warnings, the system deactivating unexpectedly, and unusual handling characteristics when the system fails. The electric actuator motors on the rear axle can overheat or lose calibration, causing the rear wheels to remain turned slightly off-center.

S-Class models equipped with E-Active Body Control (the active hydraulic suspension) can develop hydraulic fluid leaks at the suspension strut connections and high-pressure lines. The system operates at extremely high pressures, making leaks more likely at connection points.

Dealer identifies and replaces the leaking hydraulic line, strut, or fitting. The S-Class's advanced MBUX with augmented reality head-up display and 3D instrument cluster exhibits software crashes, incorrect AR overlays on the windshield, and depth rendering errors on the 3D display that can cause driver disorientation. The AR navigation can project arrows in wrong positions, and the 3D cluster's eye-tracking system may lose calibration, displaying content that appears blurry or doubled.

Dealer updates all MBUX system modules to the latest software version. The head-up display projector and 3D cluster camera may need recalibration. Mercedes-Benz has released multiple over-the-air updates addressing AR and 3D display performance. In severe cases, the instrument cluster module is replaced.

The W223 S-Class features electrically-operated flush door handles that pop out when the driver approaches or presses the handle surface. The handles can freeze in the flush position during cold weather, fail to extend due to electric motor failure, or become stuck in the extended position. Owners in cold climates report being locked out of their vehicles because the handles will not extend in freezing rain and ice.
