The 2010 Jeep Commander maintenance specs on this page cover the key fluids, torque values, and wear items you need for routine service. Use these numbers as a quick reference when performing oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs, and other scheduled maintenance on your Jeep Commander.

For oil changes, the 2010 Jeep Commander takes 5W-20 Full Synthetic motor oil with a capacity of 5 quarts. Brake fluid type is DOT 3, the recommended coolant is Mopar OAT (Purple/Violet), and transmission fluid is ATF+4. Always use the manufacturer-recommended fluids to maintain warranty coverage and engine longevity.

When mounting wheels on the Jeep Commander, torque the lug nuts to 95 ft-lbs using a calibrated torque wrench. Over- or under-torquing can lead to warped brake rotors or loose wheels. Re-torque after 50 to 100 miles on newly installed wheels.

Owners of the 2010 Jeep Commander have reported 5 common issues including "TIPM Failure and Multiple Electrical Malfunctions", "5.7L Hemi MDS (Multi-Displacement System) Lifter Failure" and "Transfer Case Leak and Engagement Failure". Scroll down to the Diagnostics tab for detailed descriptions, solutions, and estimated repair costs.

There are 4 NHTSA safety recalls on file for the 2010 Jeep Commander. Check the Recalls tab below for full details.

Common problems reported by 2010 Jeep Commander owners, with recommended fixes and estimated repair costs.

1

TIPM Failure and Multiple Electrical Malfunctions

The 2008 Commander's TIPM is a frequent failure point, causing a variety of electrical issues including fuel pump relay failure (no-start or continuously running pump), intermittent power window and lock operation, random horn honking, and dashboard warning light malfunctions. The TIPM is especially vulnerable to water intrusion from windshield seal deterioration.

Solution

Replace the TIPM assembly. Inspect the windshield seal and reseal if water intrusion is found near the TIPM mounting location. TSB 08-039-08 covers TIPM diagnostic procedures for the XK Commander. An external bypass relay can be installed for the fuel pump relay as a temporary fix.

Est. Cost: $400 - $1,200
2

5.7L Hemi MDS (Multi-Displacement System) Lifter Failure

The 5.7L Hemi V8 with MDS cylinder deactivation is prone to lifter tick and lifter failure, particularly on the MDS deactivation cylinders. The hydraulic lifters collapse or fail to lock into position, producing a loud ticking noise and triggering misfire codes. In severe cases, a failed lifter roller can damage the camshaft lobe, requiring extensive engine work.

Solution

Replace the failed lifters with updated roller lifters. TSB 09-006-08 REV. B covers MDS lifter replacement and camshaft inspection procedures. Many technicians recommend replacing all 16 lifters when one fails. If the camshaft lobe is damaged, the camshaft must also be replaced. An MDS delete kit that replaces the solenoids with solid plugs is available aftermarket.

Est. Cost: $1,500 - $4,000
3

Transfer Case Leak and Engagement Failure

The NV245 transfer case in the Commander develops fluid leaks from the front and rear output shaft seals, the pump seal, and the case halves. Low fluid levels from leaks cause internal wear and eventual failure of the planetary gear set, manifesting as grinding noises and an inability to shift between 2WD and 4WD modes.

Solution

Replace the leaking transfer case seals and top off with Mopar ATF+4. If the transfer case grinds or fails to engage, internal damage has likely occurred requiring a rebuild or replacement. TSB 21-007-08 covers transfer case fluid level inspection. Check the transfer case motor and electronic shift module if mode selection is erratic.

Est. Cost: $300 - $2,500
4

Dashboard Cracking

The 2008 Commander's dashboard develops cracks along the top surface above the instrument cluster and near the defroster vents. The cracks are caused by prolonged UV exposure and heat cycling of the vinyl dashboard material. This is a cosmetic issue but also creates a safety concern as it can affect airbag deployment from the passenger dash-mounted airbag.

Solution

Replace the dashboard assembly, which is a labor-intensive process requiring removal of the entire instrument panel. Aftermarket dashboard covers and caps are available as a less expensive cosmetic solution. Chrysler did not issue a recall despite the airbag deployment concern. Using a windshield sunshade can slow crack progression.

Est. Cost: $200 - $2,000
5

Rear Differential and Axle Seal Leaks

The rear differential pinion seal and axle tube seals leak gear oil, leaving puddles under the rear of the vehicle. If the gear oil level drops sufficiently, the differential will begin whining and eventually suffer bearing and gear damage. The issue is accelerated by towing and off-road use which increase differential operating temperature and pressure.

Solution

Replace the pinion seal, which requires removing the driveshaft and pinion flange. Replace the axle tube seals if leaking. Top off with the correct 75W-140 synthetic gear oil for limited-slip differentials (or appropriate fluid for the specific axle type). Inspect the differential bearings for wear when replacing seals.

Est. Cost: $200 - $800

POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)

Campaign: 13V175000 Date: 07/05/2013

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Consequence

If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
