2015 RAM Promaster City

The 2018 ProMaster City uses the same troubled ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission found in the Chrysler 200 and Jeep Cherokee. The transmission exhibits harsh downshifts, delayed gear engagement, hunting between gears on slight grades, and occasional refusal to shift out of lower gears. Many commercial operators report the erratic shifting affects drivability during delivery operations.

Reflash the TCM with the latest shift calibration software per TSB 21-016-18 REV. A. Perform a transmission adaptive learning reset. If harsh shifting persists after software updates, a complete transmission fluid change with ZF-approved fluid may improve shift quality. In severe cases, valve body or complete transmission replacement may be necessary.

The ProMaster City experiences frequent dead batteries and parasitic drain caused by the body control module and telematics module failing to enter sleep mode. The sliding door contact switches and cargo light circuits are also common sources of drain. Commercial upfitters who add electrical accessories further stress the already marginal electrical system.

Perform a parasitic draw test and identify the offending circuit. Update the BCM software per TSB 08-055-18. Inspect the sliding door jamb switches for proper operation. Ensure any upfitter-added electrical loads are connected through the factory-provided upfitter interface connector and not tapped directly into vehicle wiring.

The HVAC system produces clicking or tapping noises from behind the dashboard and fails to properly control temperature on one or both sides. The blend door actuators strip their internal gears, causing the air to blow hot regardless of the temperature setting or vice versa. This issue typically manifests between 30,000 and 60,000 miles.

Replace the faulty blend door actuator motor. The ProMaster City has multiple actuators controlling mode, blend, and recirculation doors. Diagnosis requires identifying which actuator is clicking by listening or using a scan tool to command each actuator individually. TSB 24-002-18 covers HVAC actuator diagnosis and replacement.

Front brake pads and rotors wear prematurely on the ProMaster City, especially in commercial delivery service with frequent stop-and-go driving. The front rotors warp as early as 20,000 miles, causing brake pulsation. The rear drum brakes also require frequent adjustment and hardware replacement. The brake system is undersized for the vehicle's commercial duty cycle.

Replace front brake rotors and pads with heavy-duty aftermarket components rated for commercial use. Properly torque lug nuts to 110 ft-lbs to prevent rotor distortion. Service the rear drum brakes by replacing hardware, adjusting shoes, and inspecting the wheel cylinders. More frequent brake inspections (every 15,000 miles) are recommended for commercial use.

The 2.4L Tigershark engine with the MultiAir intake valve system consumes excessive oil, often 1 quart every 2,000-3,000 miles. The MultiAir actuator system allows oil past the intake valve seals, and the piston ring design contributes to oil consumption under load. Many owners are unaware of the consumption rate until the low oil pressure light illuminates.

Check the oil level at every fuel fill-up and top off as needed. Use 0W-20 full synthetic oil as specified. TSB 09-009-18 addresses oil consumption thresholds and the Mopar oil consumption test procedure. If consumption exceeds 1 quart per 1,000 miles, Chrysler may authorize engine repair under powertrain warranty.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2015-2017 RAM ProMaster City vehicles. These vehicles have incorrect information on the tire placard including incorrect vehicle capacity weight, total number of occupants, tire pressure and/or "None" designation for the spare tire size when a full size spare tire is present. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

The incorrect tire placard can cause the operator to exceed the vehicle's weight capacity, or inflate the tires to an incorrect pressure, affecting vehicle handling, which can increase the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the incorrect tire placard with a corrected one, free of charge. The recall began November 17, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T62.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain RAM ProMaster Trailer Light Modules, part number 68229650AB. These accessory modules were sold for installation on RAM ProMaster and ProMaster City vehicles. The Trailer Tow Lighting Control Module may have a software error on the affected vehicles and can prevent illumination of the trailer brake lights during brake actuation. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Assoc. Equipment."

Trailer brake lights that are inoperative can increase the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will mail letters to owners to try to notify the purchasers of the modules, and dealers will replace the Trailer Tow Light Control Modules, free of charge. The recall began on June 20, 2016.
