The 2020 Kia Sorento maintenance specs on this page cover the key fluids, torque values, and wear items you need for routine service. Use these numbers as a quick reference when performing oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs, and other scheduled maintenance on your Kia Sorento.

For oil changes, the 2020 Kia Sorento takes 5W-30 Full Synthetic motor oil with a capacity of 6.4 quarts. Brake fluid type is DOT 3, the recommended coolant is Phosphate-based Green/Blue, and transmission fluid is SP-IV-M (ATF). Always use the manufacturer-recommended fluids to maintain warranty coverage and engine longevity.

When mounting wheels on the Kia Sorento, torque the lug nuts to 79-94 ft-lbs using a calibrated torque wrench. Over- or under-torquing can lead to warped brake rotors or loose wheels. Re-torque after 50 to 100 miles on newly installed wheels.

Owners of the 2020 Kia Sorento have reported 5 common issues including "Engine Failure and Seizure", "Tow Hitch Harness Fire Risk (Recall)" and "Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) Jerking". Scroll down to the Diagnostics tab for detailed descriptions, solutions, and estimated repair costs.

DTC Code Lookup

Enter a diagnostic trouble code to see causes, symptoms, and fixes for the 2020 Kia Sorento.

Common problems reported by 2020 Kia Sorento owners, with recommended fixes and estimated repair costs.

1

Engine Failure and Seizure

Owners have reported sudden engine failure, loss of power, overheating, and engine stalling. The 2.4L and 3.3L engines are both affected, with some experiencing catastrophic failure due to connecting rod bearing issues. Some engines seize with no prior warning.

Solution

Kia extended the engine warranty for certain models to 15 years/150,000 miles. Check if your VIN is covered under the warranty extension. If the engine has failed, a full engine replacement is typically needed. Keep all maintenance records as proof of proper oil changes.

Est. Cost: $0 under extended warranty; $4,000 - $7,000 if not covered
2

Tow Hitch Harness Fire Risk (Recall)

The tow hitch wiring harness contains a circuit board that can catch fire if exposed to moisture. This is a serious fire hazard that prompted a safety recall in September 2022 affecting thousands of 2020 Sorentos.

Solution

Kia issued a recall to inspect and replace the tow hitch harness circuit board. Contact your dealer immediately to check your VIN. Until the recall is completed, avoid using the tow hitch electrical connection and park away from structures.

Est. Cost: Covered under recall
3

Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) Jerking

The dual-clutch automatic transmission shifts erratically causing the vehicle to lurch, especially at low speeds and in cold weather. The vehicle may surge forward when coming to a stop. Between 20-40 mph, shifting is particularly rough with the engine cold.

Solution

A TCU (Transmission Control Unit) software update from Kia can improve shift adaptation. Allow the vehicle to warm up before driving aggressively. If the DCT clutch packs are worn, a full DCT rebuild or replacement may be needed.

Est. Cost: $0 for software update; $2,000 - $4,500 for DCT replacement
4

Electrical System and Warning Light Issues

Various warning lights appear on the dashboard without clear cause, including check engine, ABS, and TPMS lights. Some owners report the push-button start failing intermittently, and headlights or taillights malfunctioning.

Solution

Have the dealer scan for diagnostic trouble codes. Many warning lights are triggered by faulty sensors rather than actual component failures. Exterior lighting issues may be caused by corroded ground connections. Check for applicable TSBs for your specific symptoms.

Est. Cost: $100 - $500 depending on the sensor/component
5

Excessive Oil Consumption

Some 2.4L engines burn oil at an excessive rate, requiring owners to add oil between scheduled changes. The oil level can drop below the minimum mark within 3,000 miles of a change, with no visible external leaks.

Solution

Have the dealer perform an official oil consumption test per Kia's procedure. If consumption exceeds specifications, piston ring or engine replacement may be warranted under the extended engine warranty. Monitor oil levels bi-weekly between changes.

Est. Cost: $0 under warranty; $3,000 - $5,000 for engine if not covered

TRAILER HITCHES

Park Outside
Campaign: 22V703000 Date: 19/09/2022

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Consequence

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Remedy

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.
