Common problems reported by 2021 RAM Promaster owners, with recommended fixes and estimated repair costs.

1

Electronic Power Steering Failures

The electric power steering system can fail suddenly while driving, causing the steering wheel to jerk violently or become extremely heavy and difficult to turn. Some failures are traced to water intrusion and corrosion in the wiring connector on the steering rack. This is extremely dangerous in a vehicle of this size and weight, particularly for fleet drivers in urban settings.

Solution

Inspect the steering rack wiring connector for corrosion and water damage. TSB 19-008-22 addresses EPS system diagnostics. Replace the steering rack assembly and connector with sealed, updated parts. Apply dielectric grease to all electrical connections to prevent future corrosion.

Est. Cost: $800 - $2,500
2

Engine Cowl Water Leak into Engine Bay

The plastic engine cowl panel between the windshield and hood warps, cracks, or separates, allowing water to flood the engine bay during rain. The water can damage the Engine Control Module, alternator, and other electrical components. Owners may notice hesitation, misfires, or electrical issues after rain events.

Solution

Replace the cowl panel with an updated design that has improved sealing. TSB 23-012-22 addresses cowl panel water intrusion. Apply sealant along the windshield-to-cowl junction. Inspect and dry any water-damaged electrical connectors.

Est. Cost: $200 - $600
3

Electronic Parking Brake Self-Application

The electronic parking brake applies itself unexpectedly while the vehicle is in gear and moving, causing sudden deceleration and loss of vehicle control for up to 5 seconds. The driver cannot accelerate during this time. This is particularly dangerous when driving over hills or in traffic.

Solution

Update the parking brake control module software. TSB 05-010-22 addresses unintended parking brake engagement. If the issue persists after the software update, replace the parking brake actuator module. Inspect the brake switch and its wiring harness.

Est. Cost: $0 - $800
4

3.6L Pentastar Rocker Arm and Engine Tick

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 in the ProMaster develops a progressively worsening engine tick caused by worn rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters. By 60,000 miles, some vehicles require new rocker arms. If not addressed promptly, cam lobe damage can occur, requiring a partial engine rebuild (top-end replacement).

Solution

Replace the rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters with updated parts. TSB 09-009-23 covers HLA and rocker arm diagnostics. Maintain strict oil change intervals using 0W-20 full synthetic oil. Top-end rebuild required if cam lobe damage has occurred.

Est. Cost: $800 - $4,000
5

Crankcase Breather Valve Blockage

The crankcase breather valve (PCV valve) becomes blocked, triggering Check Engine Light with DTC P052E71. This causes excessive crankcase pressure, which can push oil past seals and gaskets, leading to oil leaks and increased oil consumption. The issue is shared with Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans that use similar components.

Solution

Replace the crankcase breather valve assembly. Clear the DTC codes and monitor for recurrence. TSB 09-015-22 covers P052E diagnostic procedures. Inspect the intake manifold and vacuum lines for oil contamination. Replace valve cover gaskets if oil has been pushed past them.

Est. Cost: $200 - $600
